Question:
# 4-1
My
daughter has the habit of sucking her thumb during sleeping.
Only then she gets
sleeping. It is even very difficult to remove her thumb from the mouth.
And she will hold
some soft cloth in another hand.
How can I correct
her?
Answer:
Unfortunately, there
are no drugs or clear-cut advise to give that you can comply with to make
your child stop her thumb sucking. It is better to ignore the symptom if
possible and give attention to her more positive aspects. A child who actively
tries to stop thumb sucking should be encouraged and praised. The greatest
likelihood of success occurs in situations where the children themselves
desire to stop.

tiffin. He has normal, rice, sambhar and a curry for lunch and evening he
has some Tid-bits for snack along with a glass of milk.He hates fruits
but eats bananas,whenevr I buy it.Sometimes he has apple pieces(3 or 4
pieces)with honey.For dinner I give him chapathi with a freshly made curry.Hope
I am giving the right food for my child.please advice. As I am staying in
Singapore I am in great need of your advice.
Answer:
It is good
that you have noticed and mentioned that your son is normal and healthy.
You don’t have to eat all the fruits, vegetables or curries available in
the world to be healthy. It is perfectly OK for a child (just like an adult)
to have preferences regarding food. For a mother this may look very alarming.
But please don’t worry. As long as he is doing well, with regards to his
health, give him the food he prefers and not the food that you want him
to eat.

Question:
# 4-4
DR,
My son is urinating a lot and i am changing
his diapers every 2 hours. I have a feeling that he is not putting on any
weight though he eats normally, because of frequent urination.Could you
please advise me on this. Also, do you have any idea on the children's diet
that helps to put on weight?
Thank you, mala.
Answer:
Small children
may urinate quite often (averaging about 6-8 times per day). During the
cooler seasons and in cold places children generally tend to urinate more
frequently. But we suggest that you get your child examined by a pediatrician
and follow his advise. As regards diet, please check out the previous questions
on this topic (question nos. 1-4, 2-2, 2-8 & 2-9)

Question:
# 4-5
I would like to
know about my child...
my child got the conversation when he
is having high fever and how long we should care for this and what are
the medicines , to use in case of emmergency.. as well as the hospital
is little far from the place to take treatment and what is the first aid
that we have to do..
with regards
Answer:
Firstly, we
are not able to understand what you mean by the term ‘conversation’. Please
explain what it means. Secondly, if your child has high fever it is important
to give paracetamol in the dose recommended by your doctor. Do not apply
thick clothing or woolen dresses when your child is running a fever. If
the temperature continues to rise you should start to sponge the child
with ‘tepid’ water, especially over the face, neck, stomach and insides
of elbows and knees (where the blood vessels are concentrated). Continue
for about 15-20 minutes. If the child starts to shiver, add a little warm
water.
