Question: # 6-1
My baby (girl) is now 2 years old. Still she cannot/don't know to say when urine comes. [I am trying her in toilet trainer also] Is there any solution/suggestion for this?

Answer:
Control of the bladder is attained between 1-5 years. A majority of children are dry during daytime by the age of 2-3 years and during the night by 3-5 years. You can wait for some more time before you try to toilet train your child. Undue stress on toilet training at a very early age may prove counter productive.

Question: # 6-3
My daughter (age 11) is still bed-wetting. Please suggest remedy for this.

Answer:
Please refer to Question # 6-1. Normally bed-wetting tends to remit spontaneously by 10 years. We would suggest that you get your child evaluated by a Pediatrician. If there are no organic problems then reassurance and sympathetic handling of the problem are important. Avoid humiliation and punishment. Strict fluid restriction after the evening meal and waking the child during the night for urination may help. In the daytime the child may be instructed to withhold urination for a little while longer when the urge to pass urine occurs. A star chart may be maintained. Here, every day that child does not pass urine is marked with a star on the calendar, then for a fixed number of stars a gift may be given to the child. This will help in motivating the child to try and stay dry at night. If all these fail then your Pediatrician may prescribe certain medicines for your child.

Question: # 6-4
My son is 7 yrs and is very hyperactive. Even though he is very intelligent and smart (according to his teacher & his grades) he has problem paying attention in class and his very distracted. Also he talks a lot almost about everything especially science and has a very good sense of humor. But again, he can't keep quite even when absolutely necesary.
Please let me know if what the child needs is more discipline or is it something else .
Thanks,
Anitha

Answer:

From the short history that you have given it appears that your child might be having some form of attention deficit and hyperactivity. Discipline will not help. Such children tend to be intelligent but could do with some assistance and we strongly suggest that you get the advise of your Pediatrician who, after examining your child,  may want a Pediatric Psychologist to have a look at your child.

Question: # 6-10
My daughter is 9 months old and she is having constipation problem. She passes thick stools. I am giving her formula milk (NAN -nestle product), rice, vegetables and fruits. Can you please give a suggestion about her diet?

Answer:
Please avoid thickly constituted milk formula. Give food rich in residue and fiber (like green leafy vegetables, fruits etc.) and adequate water. It may help to add a little extra sugar to feeds. If nothing helps then consult your Pediatrician who may advise medications.
